Spring Lecture Series
March 2, 2020 @ 7:00 pm - 8:30 pm
An event every week that begins at 7:00pm on Monday, repeating until March 9, 2020
Join us Mondays throughout March as we welcome 3 fantastic lecturers who will be sharing some very interesting topics with us.
March 2nd & 9th – Jeffrey Lawrence, a descendant of the Bull Rider, will be speaking about an anonymous 1844 diary he found 39 years ago and has recently transcribed. It’s a diary of a four-month business trip taken by a young Smith from Smithtown from New York to Washington, DC, through portions of the Southeast, then on to Cuba before sailing back to New Orleans followed by a steamboat up the Mississippi to St. Louis and travels through portions of Kentucky and up the Ohio River to Pittsburgh. In the first lecture, Mr. Lawrence will discuss the provenance of the diary and some family and Smithtown history, which lead him to think he has figured out who wrote it, and then he will begin the author’s journey through his stay in Washington. In the second lecture, he will cover the rest of the journey. Hear a Smithtown Presbyterian’s reaction on encountering slavery firsthand, a self-described Yankee’s views on Southern food and what to do when you return to your lodgings from supper and find someone already asleep in your bed.
All lectures are free and open to all. Light refreshments will be served and goodwill donations accepted.
