PLAN A FIELD TRIP
Educational Programs
Responding to the need for a deeper understanding of Long Island history, the Smithtown Historical Society has developed outstanding education programs for school-aged children. Students will be immersed in the Colonial through Civil War Periods while exploring our twenty-acre site and historic buildings and engaging with educators dressed in period attire. All our education programs align with New York State and National standards.
Our rustic site, which includes historic buildings and a working farm, affords students (in grades 3-5) a hands-on opportunity to learn about the colonial period and the Civil War (for those in grades 4-8).
We offer two different Colonial Era field trips: Farm Life in Early America and A Day in the Life of an 18th Century Innkeeper. In addition, an annual Civil War Encampment, taking place in May each year, is offered in conjunction with Long Island Civil War re-enactors, and gives students an immersive experience into what life was like during the harsh conditions of war. *The Civil War Encampment will be back and better than ever in 2025! 2024-2025 Educational Programs
All field trips are $15 per student; teachers and chaperones are included free of charge. A minimum of four chaperones is required to assist classes with hands-on activities.
*Please note that our educators are skilled at adapting instruction and these field trips could be modified for younger or older students. We can also be flexible about start and end times.
