The Caleb Smith House
This Federal-stylehouse originally stood on Jericho Turnpike in Commack and was moved to its present site on North Country Road in 1955. When Caleb Smith II built it in 1819 he incorporated an existing 18th century structure - the portion on the right in the picture. Evidence of an earlier date for that section includes hand-hewn rafters that pre-date the sawn rafters of the left side. Although slight irregularities occur, the plan is symmetrical with rooms flanking the central axis of the hall and paired chimneys at either end of the house. Federal-style features include the denticulated cornice, front door sidelights, and ornamented interior woodwork - the motifs on the mantelpieces are especially noteworthy.
Owned by the Town of Smithtown and administered by the Smithtown Historical Society, the Caleb Smith House functions as a museum and up until the autumn of 2008 served as the Society’s headquarters.
