October 18th – “Death By Fire and Ice: The Steamboat Lexington Calamity,” with Brian O’Connor

Author Brian O’Connor presents his new book, which tells the story of the steamboat Lexington that caught fire and sank on Long Island Sound in January 1840, with approximately 147 people on board. The tragedy remains the worst maritime disaster in the history of the Sound. Detailing the rise of steam navigation in the US and the public outcry that followed the Lexington disaster, the book examines the debate in Congress during the 19th century over its power to regulate steamboat safety and the balance it struck between the need to insulate the nation’s shipping industry from liability for lost cargo while also protecting passengers. Copies of “Death By Fire and Ice” are available for preorder on Amazon, Barnes & Noble, and other booksellers.

All are welcome to attend a lecture, but we do require reservations, made at https://shsfalllecture22.eventbrite.com

The first Book Club meeting of the new year focuses on “The Address,” by Fiona Davis.

“Fiona Davis returns with a compelling novel about the thin lines between love and loss, success and ruin, passion and madness, all hidden behind the walls of the Dakota, New York City’s most famous residence. A century apart, Sarah Smythe and Bailey Camden are both tempted by and struggle against the golden excess of their respective ages — for Sarah, the opulence of a world ruled by the Astors and Vanderbilts; for Bailey, the nightlife’s free-flowing drinks and cocaine — and take refuge in the Upper West Side’s gilded fortress.”

November’s selection is Fever 1793 by Laurie Halse Anderson.

“During the summer of 1793, Mattie Cook lives above the family coffee shop with her widowed mother and grandfather. Mattie spends her days avoiding chores and making plans to turn the family business into the finest Philadelphia has ever seen. But then the fever breaks out. Disease sweeps the streets, destroying everything in its path and turning Mattie’s world upside down. At her feverish mother’s insistence, Mattie flees the city with her grandfather. But she soon discovers that the sickness is everywhere, and Mattie must learn quickly how to survive in a city turned frantic with disease.”

Meetings are held in the Roseneath Cottage; copies of the book will be available at the Smithtown Main Branch Library.
