2016 Heritage Ball Honorees

A Community Partnership in History

Each October the Smithtown Historical Society hosts a gala to honor distinguished individuals for their significant and ongoing contributions to the Smithtown community. At Smithtown Historical Society’s annual meeting at the close of January, this year’s Heritage Ball honorees were announced. This year the organization has chosen to once again acknowledge members from the six major hamlets of Smithtown Township. The 2016 Heritage Ball Partnership in History award recipients are Bob Creighton of Kings Park, Al Hornberger of Nesconset, Mark Mancini of Smithtown, Paul E. Borowski of Hauppauge, James Dowling St. James, and Jeff Gumin of Commack. “It is our privilege to honor to each of these recipients who have demonstrated a passion in sharing our mission through the civic and volunteer work they do for our community.” remarked Smithtown Historical Society Executive Director Marianne Howard. “Their ongoing commitment and generosity to our community is inspiring. I hope the entire Township will join the Smithtown Historical Society in celebrating their achievements.”   The Heritage Ball will take place on Thursday, October 20th at the Watermill in Smithtown. There will be a cocktail hour beginning at 6:30 p.m. followed at 7:30 p.m. by an awards ceremony, dinner & dancing, and raffles. Tickets are priced at $125 per person. This event will benefit the Smithtown Historical Society in its mission of commitment to the preservation, restoration, and interpretation of Smithtown’s rich heritage for the education and enjoyment of current and future generations. If you or your business members would like to be attend this event or be included the commemorative journal marking this celebration, please contact the society at (631)265-6768. Since its founding in 1955, the Smithtown Historical Society has strived to serve the community as both a viable and valuable cultural resource and toensure that the history of Smithtown Township and our Long Island heritage is preserved and interpreted for the education and enjoyment of current and future generations.  To learn more about their events and programs, please call (631)265-6768.

The Smithtown Historical Society

Our mission is to ensure that the history of Smithtown Township and our Long Island heritage is preserved and interpreted for the education and enjoyment of current and future generations.

Our mission is carried out through collection, conservation, living history events, and community engagement. We actively promote the importance of history and preservation, and maintain six houses and eight outbuildings at three locations: the Obadiah Smith House, the Caleb Smith II House, and the twenty-acre Village of the Branch Historic District Site.

We depend upon a dedicated group of volunteers to assist the professional staff in managing special events and programs. There are a wide range of opportunities for volunteers at the Society including helping with fundraising and cultural events, assisting in office duties or children’s programs, tending to tasks on our grounds, or caring for our animals. To learn more about the Smithtown Historical Society and the opportunities and benefits its historic resources offer the community, please call our office at (631) 265-6768.
