Spring Lecture Series

March 30, 2020 @ 7:00 pm - 8:30 pm

Free

Our spring lecture series concludes with a presentation by H. Robyn Stanton

Social Relations of the Kings Park Psychiatric Center, 1914-1965

Robyn explores the evolution of the inter connectivity between the former state hospital at Kings Park and the surrounding community of Kings Park, N. Y. as it extended to the patient population during the first half of the 20th century. Specifically, how the hospital’s administrative and spatial arrangement enabled members of the lay public to form both direct and indirect connections with the hospitals patients. Examining these localized dynamics allows for the historical narrative associated with the Kings Park Psychiatric Center to incorporate itself into broader histories of  mental health care services at the state and national level.

Robyn recently received her M. A. in History from Rutgers University – Newark. Her research concerns itself with the history of medicine in 19th-20th century America. Robyn is interested in the social life of America’s former psychiatric hospitals as it relates to the general public, and how the lived experiences of these local dynamics situate themselves in local memory.

This lecture is free and open to all. Light refreshments will be offered. Goodwill donations are accepted.
